Maintenance, What You Should do to Maintain Your Computer

Maintenance is almost as important as protecting it. By keeping the OS and Applications current with updates, you lessen the chance of Hackers an other bad guys, being able to get into your computer.

About once a year, or more often, depending on where you have your computer setup. You should disconnect it from everything. Then take it outside open it up and hook your vacuum cleaner hose to the exhaust hole of the vacuum, and blow it out. Paying special attention to the area where the CPU is installed (this area generates a lot of heat), and fans are in the power supply(they get very dusty).

Another thing I do, is that when I download a file from the Internet, I never never open the file till after a Virus an SpyWare scan has been done. I do not know how many times this practice has saved me from hours of grief, by not allowing Bad Guys to get into my computer this way.

At the very least you should clean up your Hard Drive and Defrag it at least once week. There is a utility in Windows for this.

I personally like the FREE Hard Disk-Defrag utility at the link shown below.

There is also a FREE utility called CCleaner, there is a link to it at the bottom of this page.

You should also clean up the Registry and Defrag it, at the same time. There is a link to a FREE Registry-Defrag utility at the bottom of this page.

The best time to do this is when you have installed or removed an application

There is a nice test at Gibson Research that test your computer for OPEN PORTS. With open ports your computer can be HIJACKED
